Canada Nanny Program: A Trusted Pathway to Work and Settle in Canada

Canada is well known for its progressive immigration system and commitment to supporting families. One key program that continues to help both Canadian families and foreign workers is the Nanny (Caregiver) Immigration Program. This pathway allows individuals with caregiving experience to work in Canada legally—and in many cases, eventually apply for permanent residency (PR).

At The Singh Overseas – Immigration and Consulting, we specialize in helping caregivers, nannies, and home support workers build a better future in Canada. We guide you through every step of the process: from finding a job, applying for a work permit, and transitioning to PR.

What is the Nanny Program in Canada?

The Nanny Program, officially known as the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot, is a federal immigration program under Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These pilots were launched to replace the older Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) and are designed for foreign nationals who wish to work as caregivers for children, the elderly, or persons with disabilities in private homes across Canada.

Why Choose Canada as a Nanny or Caregiver?

1. Legal Pathway to Work and PR

The pilot programs allow eligible candidates to apply for a work permit and PR together—a unique benefit not offered by many other immigration programs.

2. Family-Friendly Immigration Policy

Caregivers can bring their family members, including spouses and dependent children, when applying.

3. In-Demand Occupation

Due to Canada’s aging population and high workforce participation among parents, there is a constant demand for skilled nannies and caregivers across the country.

4. Fair Wages and Safe Environment

Nannies in Canada are paid competitive wages, are protected under Canadian labor laws, and enjoy a safe working environment.

5. Support from Employers and Consultants

With expert assistance from The Singh Overseas, you get reliable connections to licensed employers and complete application support.

Types of Caregiver Programs in Canada

Canada currently offers two main streams for caregivers:

Home Child Care Provider Pilot (NOC 44100)

For nannies and caregivers who care for children under the age of 18 in their employer’s home.

Home Support Worker Pilot (NOC 44101)

For those caring for elderly persons, individuals with disabilities, or those needing home care due to chronic illnesses.

Both pilots offer a direct path to permanent residency, and you do not need to live in your employer’s home.

Eligibility Criteria for the Canada Nanny Program

To qualify for a work permit and PR under these pilots, you must meet the following:

  • Job Offer: A genuine and full-time job offer from a Canadian employer in one of the eligible occupations.

  • Language Proficiency: CLB level 5 in English or French (IELTS or CELPIP for English).

  • Education: Minimum of one year of post-secondary education, equivalent to Canadian standards (ECA required).

  • Work Experience: If applying under the gaining experience category, no prior Canadian experience is needed. However, if you already have 24 months of eligible Canadian caregiver experience, you may apply directly for PR.

  • Medical and Police Clearance: Required for you and accompanying family members.

  • Intent to Reside Outside Quebec: Quebec does not participate in these federal programs.

Application Categories: Two Pathways to PR

🔹 Category 1: Gaining Experience Pathway

If you don’t have 24 months of Canadian caregiver experience yet, you’ll receive a work permit to come to Canada and work. After completing the 24 months of eligible work, you can apply for PR.

🔹 Category 2: Direct Permanent Residency Pathway

If you already have at least 24 months of eligible Canadian work experience in the past 36 months, you can apply for permanent residency directly.

Required Documents for Nanny Visa Application

  • Valid passport

  • Job offer letter (from a qualified Canadian employer)

  • LMIA (if required, but generally not for these pilots)

  • Education Credential Assessment (ECA)

  • IELTS/CELPIP test result

  • Resume and reference letters from past employers
